Daimler celebrates the birth of the truck, 125 years after it was first built. It was just one of the new areas of inventor Gottlieb Daimler's engine: others included the motorcycle, the motorised trolley car and a motorised firefighting hose. The 1896 design looked like a cart with an engine and without a drawbar. The engine, called 'Phoenix', was a 4hp two-cylinder engine located at the rear, with a displacement of 1.06 litres. Daimler linked it by belt to the rear axle. Fuel consumption was six litres of petrol per 100km. |
