Each year numerous bridge deck joints must be replaced and/or repaired in the Arizona State Highway System Inventory. Certain types of bridge deck joints have failed prematurely or required extensive repairs within a very short time after installation. This is due in part, but not limited to, poor design, poor quality materials, improper engineering, faulty installation, and poor concrete quality. This has become a great concern in maintaining the state highway system, not to mention the enormous cost of replacing and/or repairing bridge deck joints. This also causes great inconvenience to the motoring public due to traffic control and closures required on an already congested highway system. Although considerable research has been conducted in this area, most of the work deals with bridges built in other climates. The desert Southwest imposes some unique performance requirements. The area is arid, experiences large daily temperature changes, and high ultraviolet exposure. The northern portion of the state is also subjected to cold temperatures, and ice and snow control (salt and cinders) measures. The performance of bridge deck joint seals in Arizona has been evaluated and joint seal designs developed for the unique Arizona conditions. / NOTE:Final rept. |
