摘要: A new field measurement method is proposed to measure the approach delay at signalized intersections and to validate travel-time estimation models for arterial transportation systems. This method can provide fundamental and high quality information for field delay measurement and travel-time model use that can be readily used by engineers in small and medium-sized cities who often have limitations to resources and vendor supplied hardware and software. The method utilizes recording timestamps for vehicles at three specified event locations on the approach, using a video camera recording system to collect the data. During the study, thirty 15-minute time intervals were recorded at seven different approaches, representing different lane configurations. To measure the method's accuracy, both the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) delay measurement method and vehicle tracking methods were applied, using the same time intervals used in the research for the proposed method. The proposed method and the HCM method were validated with the vehicle tracking benchmark data. Results of the research provide an accurate manual turning movement field measurement methodology by using point data. It also demonstrates that the proposed field delay measurement method can be used successfully and effectively in small to medium-sized cities as well as large urban areas.
