If you are a UK-based reader, you probably still think of National Express primarily as the operator of the white long-distance British scheduled coach service first branded as National in 1972, or as the main provider of local buses in the West Midlands. But it has long since grown into a much bigger international business. Its North American division, National Express LLC (NELLC), has been in existence for 23 years and pre-Covid-19 generated 44% of the group's turnover. This is the story of that important part of today's National Express Group. The transformation from UK coach operator to international group began on 1 December 1992 when chief executive Ray McEnhill and deputy chief executive Adam Mills led its flotation on the London Stock Exchange. Their objective was to diversify into new passenger transport modes such as rail and to expand geographically. |
