Although the colour photographs in this book - it has a greater proportion of words to pictures than many of Amberley's publications - were taken in or after 1974, several of the 28 municipal undertakings that it describes ceased to exist before then and one of them was never wholly in Lancashire. The one that will raise the eyebrows of geographical purists is Stockport, which before the local government reform of 1974 was largely in the historic county of Cheshire, other than districts to the north of the River Mersey. Today it is in Greater Manchester and it is included along with all of the other municipal undertakings absorbed into the Greater Manchester PTE with the exception of SHMD, the Stalybridge, Hyde, Mossley & Dukinfield Board, of which S, H and D were all firmly in Cheshire where the buses were registered. |
