Once the UK's top selling coach marque, Bedford's fortunes were declining before parent company General Motors quit the bus, coach and truck markets and sold the Dunstable factory in 1987. This informative addition to Amberley Publishing's picture album portfolio looks at the larger products that Bedford produced over its final quarter century of coach and bus manufacturing, confining itself to 180 colour photographs and descriptions of the models with which Howard Berry has first-hand experience. That is no small selection, as the only omissions are the wheel forward VAS and SB and the rear-engined JJL midibus which never made it beyond the prototypes. They make way for a good cross-section of views of the front-engined twin-steer VAL and its shorter two-axle counterpart the VAM, and the successive iterations of the mid-engined Y-series that began with in 1970 with the YRQ and in later years included chassis shortened or lengthened by Tricentrol. |
