An updated risk assessment by the Department for Transport (DfT) in mid-May has paved the way for bus operators to relax capacity restrictions. All forward-facing seats may now be used, except for those nearest to the driver. This measure was also extended to coach travel from May 27. Side- and rear-facing seats remain out of use, along with the ban on standing passengers. However, to cope with higher loads, many operators have chosen to fix opening windows in the open position to assist with ventilation. Coupled with wider relaxations in England, passenger numbers jumped immediately. DfT figures show a new high of 66% of normal use was achieved on Tuesday 18 May, the highest figure since the intital lockdown in March 2020. Patronage in both London and the rest of England is now routinely at least 60%, with National Express West Midlands reporting almost 70% by the end of May. |
