摘要: The pictures in this colour album, taken by Mike Rhodes since the 1970s, are a mixture of views of garage buildings with buses and coaches, and "depot shots" of vehicles parked in garage yards across England, Wales and Scotland. With each, he tells something of the history of the premises and the sites on which they were built, and of the fete of the many that have since closed. The most atmospheric are those where the buildings and their fixtures and fittings are as prominent as the vehicles they house. He provides a broad introductory account of the rise and fall of the purpose-designed garage, considers that the 11 oldest in London are each an average of over 100 years old and that, perhaps by coincidence, a surprising number around the country were built close to football stadia. He should be commended for his diligent historical research, revealing such facts as Churchdale Road, where Eastbourne Corporation's garage was located from 1903, being known within the lifetime of the premises as Destructor Road (after the town's waste incineration works) and later as Corporation Road. He also identifies the small number built on more than one level.
