Bus franchising looks set to go ahead in three more areas, following the election of Labour mayors promoting the policy. Steve Rotheram was re-elected in the Liverpool City Region, where his manifesto included a pledge to take "greater control over our bus network by using new powers in the Bus Services Act." West Yorkshire's first elected mayor, Tracey Brabin, told a meeting of the Combined Authority's transport committee that an "integrated joined up transport system... is absolutely a lynchpin of my focus on the next three years." Referring to the government's new bus strategy requiring an enhanced partnership ahead of any franchising, she said that West Yorkshire could "ride two horses and continue our journey towards political control." In Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Dr Nik Johnson displaced previous mayor James Palmer, who had championed the CAM metro, which included tunnels under Cambridge. Dr Johnson has announced that he plans to drop CAM, but will press ahead with franchising for buses, a policy which was supported by all three main mayoral candidates. |
