REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS IN SERVICE, WHICH ARE STRESSED TOGETHER IN PAIRS OVER AN INTERIM CONNECTION TO PRODUCE PERMANENTLY OPEN CRACKS, ARE BEING STUDIED TO DETERMINE THE INFLUENCE OF CRACK WIDTH AND CONCRETE COVER ON THE FORMATION OF RUST ON THE REINFORCEMENT UNDER VARIOUS CLIMATIC CONDITIONS (NORTH SEA, RUHR AREA, MUNICH) IN RELATION TO SERVICE LIFE. THE TEST SAMPLES WERE IN SERVICE IN THE YEAR 1961. HITHERTO STUDIES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT AFTER ONE YEAR OF SERVICE (ON 8 BEAMS), AND AFTER 4 YEARS OF SERVICE (ON 12 BEAMS). THE TESTS CARRIED OUT AFTER 1 YEAR OF SERVICE HAVE SHOWN THAT MORE EXTENSIVE WORK NEEDS TO BE CARRIED OUT THAN ORIGINALLY ANTICIPATED. |
