Another Optare Tempo caught David Longbottom's attention recently, not so much for what it was as what it contained. B&N Coaches of Burnley was operating A12 BXN on behalf of Go North West during the Greater Manchester operator's prolonged strike. This vehicle was originally 2862 in the Arriva Cymru fleet, operating longer distance TrawsCymru services, and came from an operator in Cornwall. What prompted David to point his camera was the gun metal object on the dashboard, next to the steering wheel. None other than a manual Almex ticket machine, a relic of simpler times when such equipment only issued tickets and recorded sales, unlike the clever technology on today's buses. And all the more surprising because, as the strike went on, Go North West lent several of its own vehicles (with ticket machines) to the assisting operators in part because it wanted to control and record the sale of tickets and use of passes. |
