Stagecoach has revived the historic Ribble Motor Services name for the legal entity behind its Merseyside & South Lancashire business. The group acquired the then 70-year-old Preston-based Ribble company in March 1989, a year after its managers had bought it from the state-owned National Bus Company. It took its name from the 75mile river that flows from the Yorkshire Dales through Preston and into the Irish Sea between Lytham St Annes and Southport. Ribble grew to serve a huge part of northwest England from Carlisle to Liverpool, but NBC transferred parts to the neighbouring Cumberland and North Western companies in 1986 and Stagecoach sold the east Lancashire operations to Blazefleld Holdings in 2001. Stagecoach ceased using the Ribble name around the same time, but retained Ribble Motor Services Ltd as a dormant company. Glenvale Transport, the Liverpool-based business acquired in 2005, was the legal name on the sides of its Merseyside & South Lancashire buses, but this was renamed Ribble Motor Services from July 5. Managing director Matt Davies says operations will otherwise continue as before. "The change is being made to utilise a legal name that better reflects the company's heritage and was being considered prior to the pandemic but has obviously not been a priority. There are no plans at present to actively adopt the Ribble name or branding." |
