In a move that appears to relate to the closure of Arriva's Sheerness depot [Buses June), Stagecoach South East is introducing a new service that takes the operator well into the heart of Arriva territory at Maidstone. From the beginning of August, routes X3 and X4 will provide a half-hourly service from Canterbury via Faversham and Sittingbourne to Kent's county town. Stagecoach already reaches Sittingbourne once an hour, and the new routes will replace existing service 3X. It also holds a Kent County Council contract for schooltime journeys on route 333 between Faversham and Sittingbourne, originally an all-day service which Arriva Southern Counties abandoned in January. This too will be subsumed into new route X4, this variant requiring single-deckers to pass under a low bridge in Faversham. Stagecoach has long had a presence in Maidstone, reached from Ashford by predecessor East Kent since 1929. The new routes will compete with Arriva service 334 between Maidstone, Sittingbourne and Sheerness, also half-hourly and which has moved from the closed depot at Sheerness to Maidstone. |
