A fully electric coach embarking on a UK wide Zero Carbon Tour for sustainability organisation Planet Mark became stranded due to a lack of serviceable charging points in Cornwall. The 'Carbon Battle Bus' Yutong TCe12 from Westway Coach Services, with a 200mile range, travelled 263miles from London to the Eden Project in Cornwall with one recharge in Cullompton, Devon. However, it then found live local charging sites - including the Eden Project - unable to recharge it despite its popular Combined Charging System plug type and Zapp Map information suggesting otherwise. To conserve its remaining 60-70mile range, the team used an electric car before the coach conservatively crawled - down to 27mph on the M5 - 89miles back to Cullompton. It arrived with just 9% charge remaining after benefiting from downhill regeneration. Planet Mark Founder and CEO Steve Malkin says: 'The Carbon Battle Bus has the range and capability to easily make this journey, but the poor state of the UK charging infrastructure means we only found one charger serviceable on our route from London to Cornwall'. He says they met many other electric vehicle owners with similar frustrations and there was a need for greater infrastructure investment to help meet zero carbon targets. The Cornwall visit tied in with the G7 Summit at Carbis Bay where PM Boris Johnson called on advanced economy leaders to make bigger commitments on low carbon vehicles. The tour ends at November's COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow. |
