摘要: Westminster City Council and The Crown Estate have published proposals to create two pedestrian plazas each side of Oxford Circus which will effectively cut Oxford Street in two. The road will be closed between Oxford Circus and Gt. Portland Street to the east, and Oxford Circus and John Princes Street to the west, initially through the introduction of a six-month experimental traffic order. Regent Street will remain open to traffic. The council has been developing proposals since its withdrawal of support for plans put forward by the mayor of London to pedestrianise the whole street led to these being abandoned [Look in on London August 2018). The number of buses crossing Oxford Circus has been reduced significantly in recent years in connection with the mayor's aborted plans and only two day-time routes, the 98 (Holborn - Willesden) and 390 (Victoria - Archway) now run the full length of Oxford Street. These are likely to be diverted along parallel roads. The 94 (Acton Green - Piccadilly Circus), 139 (Waterloo - Golders Green) and 159 (Marble Arch - Streatham Station) also pass through Oxford Circus in order to access Regent Street. Transport for London has previously proposed withdrawing the 94 and 159 from Oxford Street in connection with the mayor's earlier pedestrianisation plans (Look in on London January 2018). Documentation produced in support of the latest initiative suggest that these proposals will be resurrected. It also appears that routes 22 (Putney Common - Oxford Circus) and 113 (Edgware - Oxford Circus) will be curtailed short of Oxford Circus. Several routes terminate in side-roads near Oxford Circus and alternative arrangements will be provided for these which, it is claimed, will be more efficient.
