Transport for London has secured planning approval to install opportunity charging equipment to support the introduction of opportunity charged buses on route 358 (Orpington - Crystal Palace). At around 16 miles in length, the route, which is currently run by Go-Ahead London's Metrobus operation, is long by London standards. Buses can cover up to 170 miles a day which is beyond the range of current battery-electric vehicles on a single charge. Chargers will be provided at each end of the route. They will include pantographs which will be lowered onto charging bars on the vehicle roof. Although the most recent contract, which took effect in September 2020, was awarded based on new battery electric single-decker vehicles, the route continues to be largely operated by Mercedes Benz Citaro single-deckers dating from 2015. Documents submitted in support of the planning application suggest that 20 Irizar ieTrams will be introduced, although no order has yet been placed. |
