August 1961 Buses Illustrated brought this drawing of the Metro-Cammell bodywork specially designed for Liverpool Corporation's landmark order for 200 Leyland Atlanteans, the first of which - L501 (501 KD) - appeared at the Commercial Motor Show in London in September 1962. As editor Alan Townsin explained, it incorporated important internal modifications to improve passenger circulation, of which an increase in the gangway width between the driving compartment and nearside front wheelarch was possibly the most important. Never afraid to express a considered opinion, he suggested that it "might well prove to be a style-setting design." "The top-heavy effect caused by shallow windows upstairs and deep ones downstairs on previous highbridge Atlanteans is eliminated by fitting equal-depth windows throughout, while the sloping of certain pillars does much to give a better balanced side elevation." As Mark Youdan's picture of now preserved L501 in 2015 shows, the real vehicle was true to the preview drawing. That real bus impressed Alan Townsin when he saw it at Earls Court in 1962, judging that it "fully came up to expectations" and "the appearance and finish throughout set a new standard which seems bound to have far-reaching repercussions". |
