Still on the theme of mystery vehicles, Graham Ashworth has another to rival the curious Mitsubishi he provided for 'Tales' in February. He photographed it in September 1992 when driving to Showbus at Woburn but that's not where it was going. His research reveals that it was first registered in the UK in January 1992 and was last taxed until May 1996, after which it was exported to an unidentified land. The Q-registration shows that its age could not be determined in 1992. It's an MAN, but model type and engine position are not clear and it is left-hand-drive. And as any self-respecting Buses reader can tell at a glance, it has the front of an Optare Delta body. But Graham can find no evidence of Optare having built such a vehicle. Around the turn of the 1990s, Optare offered to satisfy growing interest in bendybuses from operators like Grampian and Yorkshire Rider with an articulated Delta, which like the rigid version was based on a DAF SB220 chassis. It also worked with MAN on the Vecta which was a big midibus equivalent. The best guess is that this either was built with a Delta front or acquired it secondhand. Unless, as with all such conundrums, you know better. |
