The Fylde Transport Trust marked three anniversaries with a running day in Blackpool on June 13. This year marks the centenary of the start of municipal bus operation in Blackpool (on a route linking Cleveleys and Thornton), 60 years since the corporation ceased running trams on Lytham Road and 35 since Blackpool Transport introduced ex-London Routemasters. The trust operated heritage bus rides every 15min along Lytham Road between North Pier, Halfway House and Blackpool Airport at Squires Gate, using former Blackpool, Lytham St Annes and Fylde vehicles. The Blackpool vehicles included MCW-bodied Leyland Titan PD3/11 529 (LFR 529F) new in 1968, which was photographed on the Promenade after setting out from the nearby North Pier. Recent restorations showcased on the day included Lytham St Annes Corporation 77 (ATD 281J), the survivor of three Northern Counties-bodied one of three Leyland Atlantean PDRlA/1s delivered in 1970 with Nottingham-style fronts. It passed to Blackpool Transport in 1994 when it acquired the recently privatised Fylde Blue Buses company and was renumbered 458. It was withdrawn in October 1996 and purchased by the trust the following year. Also recently restored is another long lived Atlantean from the Fylde fleet. Blue Buses 7 (TKU 469K), with 1993 Northern Counties Paladin single-deck body, has a 33ft PDR2/1 chassis new to Bradford Corporation in 1971. It was part of a batch with dual door Alexander double-deck bodies bought to replace some of Britain's last trolleybuses and was sold later to Kingston upon Hull City Transport. Blue Buses bought four of the chassis early in 1992, overhauled them and then had them rebodied. |
