The Transport Museum Wythall hopes to have its newly overhauled 1948 Midland Red Cl coach ready to make its running debut on October 3. Duple-bodied 3301 (KHA 301), with underfloor-engined chassis built at the BMMO Carlyle Works in Birmingham, is set to have a starring role at the museum's Midland Red event, but put in a surprise appearance for visitors attending an open day on May 31. This was its second shakedown run and first public display since it underwent an extensive overhaul and restoration. The 45 Cls, with centre entrance Duple bodies to Midland Red design, were the operator's first new postwar coaches and its first with underfloor engines. It had built prototype underfloor-engined single-deck buses during World War Two and built its first production versions in 1946. |
