The UK car market was up 16.2% year-to-date (YTD) April, but that is even less meaningful than a statistic in a party political broadcast. April 2020 was the first month of lockdown, when only 4,321 cars were sold, so it would be impossible not to show a rise at this point in the year. A more significant measure of the health of the car market is that the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) expects 2021 to finish at 1.86 million units, which would be 13.9% up on 2020. That would definitely mark the start of a recovery, but 1.9 million would still only be back to where we were in the early-to-mid-1990s. |
