The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has reported that March 2021, at 284,000 units, saw an increase of 11.5% over March 2020. On the face of it, that's good news, but it is still like a doctor saying the condition of a hospital patient has improved slightly. March 2021 was still 36.9% below the average March figure for the 10years from 2010-1019. It was also below the figure of 314,000 for March 2009, the lowest point of the financial crisis. Year-to-date (YTD). the market is down 12%, although the year-on-year figure should steadily improve over the coming months. The SMMT is forecasting a 12.1% increase for 2021 over 2020, which seems reasonable, if slightly depressing given how bad 2020 was. For manufacturers, VW is fractionally ahead of Ford (both are on 8.5%, but VW has sold slightly more). It should be said that VW was also ahead of Ford at the end of the first quarter of 2020, but Ford retained overall market leadership for the year. |
