摘要: People use containers and planters as gardens in urban settings to soften the hard edges created by modern building materials like concrete, glass, and steel. Container gardening is an easy way to bring plants with color and texture to drab city roofs and other structures. They can be moved around and be modified every year or season and can be placed on roofs, balconies, walls, bridges, and roadsides. A greenroof is another way to bring plants to an urban setting. It creates a large scale planting that provides the building with economic and environmental benefits besides aesthetic views. Planters and containers allow vegetables to grow almost anywhere it is desired by using a volume of growing substrate to provide plants with water, nutrients, and anchorage. Aesthetic planted containers often require extensive seasonal maintenance. Conventional container potting media are organic-based or soil-based and require frequent irrigation, additions of nutrients, and annual replacement due to decomposition and shrinkage. Planters can be very large or filled with dense growing media and therefore may be heavy to move or require extensive structural modifications of buildings or bridges to support their weight. / Supplementary Notes: Sponsored by Rhode Island Dept. of Transportation, Providence.
