Infrastructure development has been placed as a priority by the new US administration, with plans to improve transportation and provide construction jobs. The proposals call for spending up to US$387 billion on transportation infrastructure improvements. The American Jobs Plan (AJP) is being put forward as a way to rebuild US infrastructure while also boosting employment and economic growth. The plan includes investment beyond transportation infrastructure such as broadband, school construction, and drinking water. Meanwhile, measures to reduce climate change and "racial equity and environmental justice" initiatives are also included in the proposals. President and CEO of the American Road Transportation and Builders Association (ARTBA), Dave Bauer, participated in a White House briefing on details of the plan. Key features of the programme include $115 billion to be spent on modernising roads and bridges with a focus on rebuilding for resilience. This is of key importance as the US interstate highway network is in dire need of improvement. Many highways are heavily congested while road surfaces are in poor condition yet still being used, despite being long past their design life. The US also has a serious problem with regard to its bridges. Over 220,000 bridges in the US need to be repaired or replaced, according to a recent report by ARTBA. The report also highlights that 45,000 bridges in the US remain structurally deficient and in poor condition. Of these 45,000 structurally deficient bridges, nearly 11,200 are in "serious" or worse condition. This includes 1,668 that are in "critical" condition, 440 that are in "imminent" failure, and 970 that are in "failed" condition and are out of service. |
