A new product from Sika is said to improve the properties of low-quality aggregate. This helps meet the demand of the construction sector, which is facing a shortage of quality aggregates in some sectors. The product is said to be environmentally friendly and can help boost the performance of contaminated material. While supplies of aggregates may feature contaminant, it is important to understand the type, quantity and variability of the contamination to maximise the workability and effectiveness of each batch. Whether its mineralogical speciation or physical properties such as fineness, surface area, surface charge or ability to swell, each of these will have an impact on the structural integrity of the concrete mix. The presence of contaminated aggregates are often tackled by adding more cement. But this increases the cost and, more importantly, CO_2 emissions. Sika Stabilizer-500 VCC is formulated to improve the plastic and hardened properties of concrete containing fine aggregates with variable contaminant content. Negating the effect of contamination, it can control the variability of the properties of concrete and improve the environmental credentials. |
