Local authorities in England are keen to go green with their road maintenance and construction programmes as the UK Government pursues its 'green industrial revolution' and post-pandemic recovery strategies. March 2021 saw the Government publish more details about its £4 billion Levelling Up fund, part of which will go towards transport investments including local road improvements and active travel. Capital and infrastructure projects should support 'net zero goals', says the Government, such as low or zero carbon technology. Green credentials were an important part of Leicestershire County Council's bid for £5 million from the Local Highways Maintenance Challenge fund, according to Tarmac which helped them with the bid. The A426 Blaby Bypass, where Tarmac has now installed 4,800tonnes of rubber-modified asphalt, was one of the three schemes covered by the funding from the Department of transport which was awarded last July. Although Tarmac has used its rubberised asphalt on over 20 projects to date, this was the largest ever application, reusing the equivalent of 3,300 waste car tyres. "It's fantastic to see Leicestershire County Council embracing the many benefits of these new asphalt technologies and become the first authority to use the new material for a project of this scale," said Tarmac's national technical director Brian Kent. |
