Three Plug-and-Play (PnP) devices were built to be implemented on the PnP distributed network that is interfaced with the ASC/3 traffic controller. These devices are the pedestrian countdown timer, the pedestrian crosswalk signal, and the pedestrian button with a wireless module. Each of these devices implements a microcontroller to allow network communication. The microcontroller can also control the state (ON or OFF) of each LED individually and also monitor their performance and adjust the brightness to obtain more efficient power consumption. There are two devices that setup and control the PnP network. These are the Bridge and the PnP Controller. The Bridge will translate messages from the ASC/3 and the PnP Controller. The PnP controller is responsible for the communications between all the nodes on the distributed network. Both of these devices implement the same microcontroller as in each of the three nodes. At the 2006 UI Engineering Expo, the senior design team demonstrated how implementing the IEEE 1451 PnP standard for traffic signals and sensors communication is a feasible option for expanding the capabilities of traffic control. One of the demonstrations showed the PnP pedestrian countdown timer performed better and more accurately then the standard pedestrian countdown. The biggest advantage of using an open standard for the distributed network is that when a new type of device is invented for traffic control. The designer can design the new device to communicate on the network rather then having to re-engineer the traffic controller to allow communication between the new device and the traffic controller. / Supplementary Notes: Sponsored by Department of Transportation, Washington, DC.
