The participating groups say the project is the first of its kind in Canada. Data collection equipment will be developed and deployed by IRD and the University of Manitoba's civil engineering department. The NRC is the principal funder of the project. Major industries in the region include agriculture, petroleum, forestry and mining which need a reliable and safe road freight transport system. But the region's roads are subject to extreme seasonal changes, making them prone to risks and hazards that can disrupt the overall supply chain. With limited public sector dollars available for road development, governments are turning to tech-enabled solutions to help make better informed investment, maintenance and response decisions related to their infrastructure. The project's goal is to improve the resilience of the road network that often traverses remote sparsely populated areas and which is used mostly by commercial trucks. In 2017, trucking accounted for 55% of total merchandise exports by value in the region. |
