Following a major tanker crash on the A40 highway near Muelheim an der Ruhr, Germany, two massive railway bridges had to be demolished. The transport demands of the busy highway and rail links meant that the work had to be carried out in just one weekend. Epiroc demolition tools were used extensively for the project, with contractors employing five demolition cutters and hydraulic breakers. The crash occurred on the A40 route just under the railway bridges in Muelheim-Styrum in September 2020 and experts determined that the safety of the structures was no longer guaranteed. The devastating fire had caused massive and irreparable damage to the bridges and demolition was unavoidable. But both important railway lines and the heavily frequented city highway had to be completely closed for the work. This placed tough requirements on the contractors carrying out the demolition work. Albert Horn from Hueckelhoven was responsible for the large-scale use of seven demolition excavators. The firm was supported by Vortmann Baumaschinen from Marl, Heermann Abbruch from Gescher and Koester Abbruch from Haltern am See. Epiroc tools were used by all three firms, with support from ABT Abbruchtechnik from Billerbeck, who delivered and maintained the demolition tools. |
