摘要: Surface free energy, or simply surface energy, of asphalt binders and aggregates is an important material property that influences the performance of asphalt mixes. Principles of thermodynamics can be used to quantify the propensity of asphalt binders to debond from aggregate surfaces in the presence of water based on their surface energy components. This probably is directly related to the moisture sensitivity of asphalt mixes. Principles of fracture mechanics can be combined with the work of cohesion and adhesion derived from surface energy components of the asphalt binder and aggregates and other material properties of asphalt mastics to model crack growth behavior. These models can be used to predict the fatigue and healing characteristics of asphalt mixes. In order to use surface energy measurements to select materials for better performing asphalt pavements, it is imperative that simple, accurate, and reliable test methods be used to measure the surface energy components of asphalt binders and aggregates, and the link between surface energy and performance of mixes must be established and validated. In this study various candidate test methods to measure the surface energy components of these materials were selected based on an exhaustive literature review. / Supplementary Notes: Prepared in cooperation with Texas A and M Univ., College Station.
