Andrew Kinsey, senior marine risk consultant for insurer Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty, told Dale DuPont for this month's cover story. "You don't have time to think. You can't call 911. There's no fire department." That's why in these terrifying situations it often comes down to how well trained the crew is and how often they have taken part in live drills. And the training must be realistic and keep everyone engaged, according to Tom Guldner, president of Marine Fireflghting and a retired New York City Fire Department Marine Division lieutenant. "I'm a big proponent of live drills," he told WorkBoat. And don't do the same drill every time. "A lot of time the drills are everybody sits in the kitchen and discusses a fire in the galley." |
