In mid-June, the member states of the IMO came together once again to discuss environmental measures at the MEPC76 meeting. Knowing that the world now watches what efforts the maritime industry puts into reducing its carbon footprint, tensions ran high during the week-long meeting. With developed and developing countries having differing priorities and financial means, it was hard to agree on the immediate steps on how to tackle climate change. Pressure is on the industry, with the European Commission debating how to include shipping into the bloc's emission trading scheme in July. Many IMO member states therefore urged for a strong message to reduce emissions and not be subjected to such local measures. However, the decision to reduce carbon intensity from ships by 2% between 2023 and 2026, which eguals to an 11% reduction from 2019 levels by 2026, was classed as "weak" by the United States. |
