The Russian government is set to pump billions into seaports of the Far Eastern basin, targeting to curb logistics costs on export supplies, which are projected to rise sharply in the coming years. Still, the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic may put the feasibility of these plans under question. Before COVID-19, the Russian Far Eastern seaports were expanding cargo turnover faster than those of any other country's basin. In 2019, the turnover totaled 215 million metric tons (MMt), up 6.4% compared with the same period a year earlier, while the average increase in cargo turnover in all Russian seaports amounted to 2.4%, the national state statistical service Rosstat estimated. |
