The backlog of outstanding work in developed economies continues to rise as the COVID-19 vaccine rollout programs enable the reopening of developed economies amidst ongoing global supply chain disruptions, latest IHS Markit Purchasing Managers Indices show. Stronger demand for consumer goods raised prices for raw materials and all other inputs required to manufacture goods, including distribution, warehousing, and transportation of products. The COVID-19 pandemic has also renewed businesses' focus on managing strategic reserves and ensuring future protection of supply chains against exogenous shocks. This focus also builds upon experiences made as far back as in 2011, after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, as well as from increased trade tensions between China and some of its major trading partners in pre-2020. However, not all regions will benefit from the global supply chain diversification drive. |
