TRAFFIC FLOW THEORY; INCIDENT DETECTION; TRAVEL DEMAND
项目名称: TRAFFIC FLOW THEORY; INCIDENT DETECTION; TRAVEL DEMAND
摘要: Accurate knowledge of the relationship between speeds and flow rates on freeways is important for the effective management of those facilities. The first part of the project involves work to better specify some of the parameters of the newly understood relationship, in part through acquiring data from a number of countries that will represent freeway oprations under a variety of conditions. In addition a mathematical model of the nature of operations on freeways, based on the mathematics of catastrophe theory, has been identified and will be further developed during this project. The theoretical work has led to a procedure for detecting incidence such as accidents or breakdowns on freeways, which has been implemented on Highway 401 in Toronto. A second aspect of this project will translate the logic behind that approach to arterial roadways. The project will also investigate two aspect of travel demand forecasting: 1) an effort to bring into these procedures explicit recognition that the better the transportation network and facilities the more trips will be made; 2) the use of the bicycle as a mode for trip making (not simply for recreation).
