The City of Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador with a population of approximately 2.3 million. The city also has one of the highest population growth rates among major South American cities. In August 2001, the government operated utility - ECAPAG entered into a 30-year concession agreement with Interagua, a private company that is part of International Water Ltd (U.S. ownership). The Concession agreement gives Interagua the right to operate the water, sewer, and drainage systems of Guayaquil for the length of the concession period. Among the main challenges faced by the concessionaire are a significant coverage deficit of all infrastructures, interrupted service, low water pressure, no wastewater treatment, flood zones generated by lack of proper drainage, and illegal use of water. The Concession agreement stipulates that Interagua must install 55,238 new water and sewer connections in the first five-year period of the concession and improve the levels of service, such as pressure and continuity, in the water system. / NOTE: Export trade information. / Supplementary Notes: This document was provided to NTIS by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency, Rosslyn, VA.
