摘要: In order to provide a rational basis for proportioning concrete mixes containing fly ash and achieving optimum performance, the Federal Highway Administration at Turner Fairbank Research Center sponsored a program of testing at the Catholic University of America, Vitreous State Laboratory (CUA/VSL). Over the past four decades, CUA/VSL has developed considerable expertise in glass corrosion theory and experiment and has demonstrated successful leadership of multimillion dollar projects for government or private industry. Such expertise has been essential to the development of glass formulations used in the final disposal of the Nation's legacy nuclear wastes. This experience is now being applied to serve and support the FWHA Strategic Goals. As described below, the critical component of fly ash pozzolanic reactivity is the dissolution of its glassy phases, which typically form the bulk of the material. A thorough understanding of this phenomenon can therefore greatly benefit from a multidisciplinary approach involving basic glass science and technology in combination with principles from cement chemistry and engineering. Application of the results of this study should provide the first step towards reduction of materials costs and construction times with the potential for considerable cost savings. / Supplementary Notes: Sponsored by Federal Highway Administration, Washington, DC. / Availability Note: Order this product from NTIS by: phone at 1-800-553-NTIS (U.S. customers); (703)605-6000 (other countries); fax at (703)605-6900; and email at orders@ntis.gov.
