The report describes the third phase of an effort to develop a standard diesel exhaust which may be used in the future development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. Phase I consisted of a literature review and creation of a database of engine-out diesel emissions. To supplement limited data on light-duty diesel emissions, a second phase was initiated. The experimental effort in the second phase assessed the composition of light-duty diesel exhaust at several operating conditions and utilized that data to recommend a possible 'recipe' for light-duty diesel engine exhaust. This third phase is an effort to develop a standard diesel exhaust which may be used in the future development of diesel exhaust aftertreatment. The feasibility of preparing a synthetic diesel exhaust mixture is investigated in this report. This synthetic diesel exhaust mixture was tested in a laboratory bench synthetic gas reactor to determine if the synthetic mxture suitably captured the nature of actual diesel exhaust. Four individual diesel catalysts were evaluated on a current-technology light-duty vehicle, and the results were compared to those same diesel catalysts in the laboratory bench gas reactor. / NOTE: Final rept., 27 Feb 06-31 Dec 07. / Supplementary Notes: See also PB2005-108594, Phase 2.
