In this project, a high speed (up to 60mph) vehicle-mounted long range passive RFID (radio frequency identification) system was developed to locate highway reference markers by analyzing GPS and DMI data simultaneously. The system consists of two parts: hardware and software. The hardware includes an RFID reader, high-gain reader antenna and passive tag. The software includes a data display interface and a three-threads data acquisition system which can get the GPS, DMI and RFID data simultaneously. The read range of this system can reach up to 40 feet and locating resolution can be less than 13 feet. The life span of the whole system can be up to ten years and each of the RFID tags cost is less than 2 dollars. An extra pavement attached version of passive patch antenna RFID tag was also developed, and it can be embedded in asphalt or concrete highway pavement.
