GOOD DESIGN OF ROAD STRUCTURES AS A BASIS FOR THE OPTIMUM UTILISATION OF MATERIALS USED FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION REQUIRES (A) COMPUTER MODELS TO DETERMINE THE STATE OF STRESS AND DEFORMATION OF THE WHOLE STRUCTURE, AND (B) AN ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE OF THE PARAMETERS WHICH DESCRIBE THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MATERIALS UNDER LOAD. THE FIRST REQUIREMENT IS LARGELY MET. HOWEVER, INSUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF ROAD MATERIALS RESTRICTS THE POSSIBLE USE OF THE COMPUTER MODELS TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE QUANTITATIVE STATEMENTS ON THE STRESS AND DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF THE MULTILAYER SYSTEM "ROAD" UNDER FATIGUE LOADING. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE FOR LAYERS MADE OF UNBOUND AGGREGATES. AGGREGATES USED IN ROADS ARE TO BE EXAMINED IN THE TRIAXIAL SHEAR TEST RIG, WHERE THEY WILL BE SUBJECTED TO THE STRESS PRODUCED BY THE PASSAGE OF A WHEEL, ALTERNATING SHEAR COMBINED WITH INCREASING PRESSURE. THIS WILL NECESSITATE THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION OF TRIAXIAL EQUIPMENT WITH A SAMPLE DIAMETER OF ABOUT 30 CM. THE DYNAMIC INTRODUCTION OF THE STATE OF STRESS ONTO THE SAMPLE ALLOWS TIME-RELATED DETERMINATION OF THE STATE OF DEFORMATION AS A FUNCTION OF THE ALTERNATING LOAD INTRODUCED, AND ITS SEPARATION INTO PLASTIC, I.E. PERMANENT, AND ELASTIC DEFORMATIONS. THESE DATA SHOULD ENABLE THE MATERIAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE AGGREGATE MIXTURE, WHICH CHANGES WITH TIME, TO BE DESCRIBED IN RELATION TO SPECIFIC VALUES OF THE STONE. THIS WILL FACILITATE COMPARISONS OF THE DIFFERENT AGGREGATES IN USE, SO THAT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR QUALITY REQUIREMENTS CAN BE WORKED OUT. |
