THE USE OF LARGE PRECAST CONCRETE ELEMENTS IN BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION IS NOT RESTRICTED TO THE SEGMENTAL METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION. USUALLY HIGH CONCRETE STRENGTH AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME IS REQUIRED. THIS REQUIREMENT CAN BE MET BY HEAT TREATMENT OF THE ELEMENTS, BUT LITTLE CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN DURING HEAT TREATMENT TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF TEMPERATURE IN THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENT AND THE EFFECTS OF THIS ON STRENGTH DISTRIBUTION AND INHERENT STRESS. BY DETERMINING VALUES OF THE CONCRETE AT DIFFERENT STAGES OF HARDENING, CALCULATING MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS IN THE PRECAST ELEMENTS AT VARIOUS STAGES OF HARDENING, AND MEASURING ACTUAL DISTRIBUTION OF TEMPERATURE IN THE STRUCTURE DURING HARDENING, THE SIGNIFICANCE OF OBSERVING TEMPERATURE DURING HEAT TREATMENT IS TO BE SHOWN. PARTICULAR EMPHASIS IS TO BE PLACED ON BOTH THE SAFETY ASPECT - CHECKING TEMPERATURE STRESSES - AND THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE WORK. |
