SULPHUR ASPHALT MIXTURES CAN BE MECHANICALLY LOADED TO A GREATER EXTENT THAN CONVENTIONAL ASPHALTS. SULPHUR BITUMEN AS A BINDER FACILITATES THE USE OF MATERIAL WHICH WOULD OTHERWISE BE UNSUITABLE FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION, SINCE PROBLEMS OF SWELLING AND ADHESION BECOME SECONDARY BECAUSE OF THE DIFFERENT CHEMICAL BEHAVIOUR OF THE BINDER. LABORATORY TESTS ARE TO BE MADE OF THE PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURES, INCLUDING MODULUS OF ELASTICITY, STRENGTH, ABRASION RESISTANCE AND HEAT CONDUCTIVITY, USING SAMPLES CONTAINING TYPICAL AGGREGATES. THE CONSTRUCTION OF EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS OF ROAD CONTAINING TWO TO THREE TYPICAL AGGREGATES IS PLANNED. THESE EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS ARE TO BE OBSERVED THROUGHOUT THEIR LIFETIME AFTER ACCURATE ACCEPTANCE TESTING AND DETERMINATION OF BOUNDARY CONDITIONS SUCH AS TEMPERATURE, MOISTURE CONTENT, FROST DEPTH AND GROUND WATER. THE DYNAMIC MODULUS OF RIGIDITY AND MODULUS OF ELASTICITY ARE ALSO TO BE TESTED. THE FINISHED SECTION WILL BE CONTINUOUSLY OBSERVED AND DATA OBTAINED ON SKIDDING RESISTANCE, ABRASION AND VOLUME OF TRAFFIC CARRIED. |
