THE USE OF PRECAST MAIN GIRDERS IN BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION IS ONLY CONSIDERED EQUAL IN QUALITY TO CAST IN SITU CONCRETE BRIDGES IF, IN THE CASE OF MULTISPAN BRIDGES, THE CONCRETE DECK SLAB IS PULLED CONTINUOUSLY OVER THE ENDS OF THE PRECAST GIRDER. TO BALANCE OUT THE MOVEMENTS OF THE GIRDER, THE DECK SLAB IS SEPARATED FROM THE GIRDERS BY ABOUT 1.50 M THROUGH A SLOT, VIA INTERIM SUPPORTS; THIS FORMS A FLEXIBLE "SPRING-LOADED PLATE". UP TO NOW THIS HAS BEEN USED PREDOMINANTLY, IN THE CASE OF 1 TO 3 SPAN BRIDGES, WITH RELATIVELY SLENDER PRECAST GIRDERS PACKED TIGHTLY TOGETHER. NO ACCURATE THEORETICAL STUDIES HAVE BEEN MADE OF THE STRESS ON THE SPRING-LOADED PLATE, AND THERE ARE VERY FEW PRACTICAL STUDIES. HOWEVER, IT WAS ESTABLISHED BY INSPECTING SMALL BRIDGES IN BAVARIA BUILT BEFORE 1965 THAT THE SPRING-LOADED PLATES HAVE NOT BEEN DAMAGED. THE OBJECT OF THIS PROJECT IS TO MAKE A MATHEMATICAL STUDY OF SPRING-LOADED PLATES UNDER ALL CONDITIONS WHICH OCCUR, INCLUDING IN LONG BRIDGES WITH LARGE DISTANCES BETWEEN THE GIRDERS. MEASUREMENTS ON A COMPLETED STRUCTURE AND MODEL TESTS ARE ALSO TO BE UNDERTAKEN. |
