WITH ROAD TRAINS, PENDULUM OSCILLATIONS WITH LATERAL DISPLACEMENTS OF ROAD TRAIN PORTIONS CAN OFTEN BE OBSERVED. THIS RESULTS IN THE ROAD TRAIN NEEDING A GREATER WIDTH OF ROAD, AND THERE IS A DANGER OF SIDEWAYS SKIDDING. THESE PROCESSES CONSTITUTE CONSIDERABLE DANGER WHEN TRAFFIC DENSITIES AND AVERAGE SPEEDS ARE HIGH. THEY CAN BE INFLUENCED BY VEHICLE DRIVERS. THE RESEARCH IS TO EXAMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH THESE MOVEMENTS CAN BE PREVENTED OR CONTROLLED BY ACTIVATION OF THE STEERING WHEEL. STARTING FROM EXISTING SPATIAL MODELS A PROGRAM IS BEING PRODUCED FOR THREE-PART ROAD TRAINS AND USED TO EXAMINE THE BASIC ROAD TRAIN COMBINATIONS. |
