IN RECENT YEARS TWO FIRMS HAVE DEVELOPED EQUIPMENT FOR OBTAINING ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS OF PAVEMENT THICKNESS NON-DESTRUCTIVELY. THE METHODS ARE BASED ON ELECTRICAL MEASUREMENTS OF THE DISTANCE BETWEEN A METAL FOIL, INCORPORATED DURING CONSTRUCTION AT THE LEVEL OF THE LOWER EDGE OF THE LAYER TO BE MEASURED, AND A SENSOR PLACED ON TOP OF THE LAYER, ABOVE THE FOIL. THE STRENGTH OF THE MAGNETIC FIELD IS READ AS A FUNCTION OF THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE FOIL AND THE SENSOR. THESE INSTRUMENTS ARE CALIBRATED SUCH THAT THEY DIRECTLY INDICATE THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE FOIL AND THE SENSOR, AND THUS THE APPARENT THICKNESS OF THE LAYER IN BETWEEN. THE APPLICABILITY OF THESE METHODS IS TO BE CHECKED IN PRACTICE, IN PARTICULAR THE ACCURACY OF THE RESULTS AS A FUNCTION OF LAYER THICKNESSES, THE SIZE AND THE CONDITION OF THE FOILS, TEMPERATURE, MOISTURE CONTENT OF THE LAYERS DURING MEASUREMENT AND OTHER POSSIBLE INFLUENCES. |
