THE TOTAL SCATTER OF DATA ON BITUMINOUS MIXTURES IS BASICALLY DIVIDED INTO SCATTER CAUSED BY MANUFACTURE, SCATTER CAUSED BY SAMPLING AND SAMPLE DISTRIBUTION ON THE CONSTRUCTION SITE, AND SCATTER CAUSED BY TESTING, INCLUDING DISTRIBUTION OF THE SAMPLE IN THE LABORATORY. TO ESTIMATE SCATTER CAUSED BY MANUFACTURE IT IS NECESSARY TO KNOW THE MAGNITUDE OF THE TOTAL SCATTER AND THE SCATTER CAUSED BY SAMPLING AND TESTING. PREVIOUS WORK HAS SHOWN THAT THERE IS INSUFFICIENT KNOWLEDGE ON SCATTER CAUSED BY THE SAMPLING, AND THIS SCATTER IS TO BE DETERMINED AND CALCULATED ON THE BASIS OF A VARIANCE ANALYSIS MODEL. THE EXTENT TO WHICH SCATTER DURING SAMPLING CAN BE REDUCED BY THE USE OF SAMPLE TAKING AND SAMPLE DISTRIBUTION EQUIPMENT IS ALSO TO BE STUDIED. THE STUDY IS TO BE UNDERTAKEN AT TWO MIXING PLANTS ON FOUR TYPES OF MIXTURE, AND INCLUDE SAMPLING AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE AND IN THE MIXING PLANT. |
