IN THE COURSE OF THE PAST TEN YEARS AN ATTEMPT HAS BEEN MADE TO GIVE PRIORITY TO PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN A NUMBER OF CITIES IN GERMANY, AND IN DISCUSSIONS IT HAS BEEN GENERALLY AGREED THAT THE BUS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM. THE BUS LANE HAS BEEN USED AS A MEANS OF SPEEDING UP BUS TRANSPORT. BY MEANS OF A STUDY OF THE LITERATURE, THE TOWNS IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY WHICH HAVE INTRODUCED BUS LANES ARE BEING ESTABLISHED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOLLOWED BY EUROPEAN STATES CONSIDERED, SO THAT DIFFERENCES IN DESIGN PRINCIPLES CAN BE ASCERTAINED. THE DESIGN ELEMENTS SUCH AS LENGTH, WIDTH, POSITION ON THE CARRIAGEWAY, MARKING AND SIGNING, AND THE TRAFFIC ASPECTS SUCH AS VOLUME OF BUS TRAFFIC IN RELATION TO INDIVIDUAL TRAFFIC ARE BEING DETERMINED. |
