THE PENETRATION RATE OF AN AGENT IMPREGNATING A CERAMIC MATERIAL SUCH AS CONCRETE CAN BE REPRESENTED BY AN EQUATION, WHICH SHOWS THAT A GOOD IMPREGNATING AGENT IS CHARACTERIZED BY HIGH SURFACE TENSION AND LOW VISCOSITY. SINCE THE VISCOSITY OF A MATERIAL MARKEDLY INCREASES AS TEMPERATURE DECREASES, IMPREGNATION MUST NOT BE CARRIED OUT AT TOO LOW TEMPERATURES. BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE CAPILLARY VOIDS IN THE HARDENED CEMENT, THE ONLY IMPREGNATION MOLECULES WHICH CAN BE USED ARE THOSE WHOSE DIAMETER IS SMALLER THAN THAT OF THE VOIDS. IMPREGNATING AGENTS ARE TO BE FOUND WHICH MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS AND ALSO PENETRATE INTO THE CAPILLARY VOIDS OF THE CONCRETE WHEN HUMIDITY IS RELATIVELY HIGH. |
