THE OBJECT OF THE PROJECT IS TO EXAMINE WHETHER HOT GAS BORING TECHNOLOGY IS A TECHNICALLY FEASIBLE AND ECONOMIC METHOD OF BUILDING UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES, AND TO DECIDE ON A SYSTEM CONCEPT. THE FIRST PART OF THE WORK IS TO BE A TWO-STAGE EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAMME TO CONSIDER HOW THE DRILLED WALL CAN BE ATTAINED THROUGH VARIOUS DESIGNS OF THE DRILL HEAD, COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND GAS SUPPLY. ONE FIRM HAS ALREADY DEVELOPED A HOT GAS DRILLING MACHINE AS A PROTOTYPE WHICH HAS BEEN TRIED OUT SUCCESSFULLY IN TEST BORINGS IN SOLID ROCK. |
