THE EFFECT OF LENGTHS OF GRADIENTS ON ACCIDENTS ON SINGLE-LANE RURAL ROADS |
摘要: |
ACCIDENTS ON 85 GRADIENTS VARYING IN LENGTH FROM 0.6 TO 6.0 KM WERE EVALUATED AND RELATED TO STRUCTURAL AND TRAFFIC DATA. IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE LENGTH OF GRADIENT CORRELATES ONLY SLIGHTLY WITH ACCIDENT RATE AND ACCIDENT COSTS. ON DOWNWARD GRADIENTS THE SHORT SECTIONS STUDIED HAD A CONSIDERABLY HIGHER ACCIDENT RATE, WHEREAS ON UPWARD GRADIENTS THE LONGER SECTIONS HAD A SLIGHTLY HIGHER ACCIDENT RATE. IT WAS SHOWN THAT ON UPWARD GRADIENTS, NOT UNTIL THE SECTION EXCEEDED 3 KM IN LENGTH WAS THERE AN INCREASE IN ACCIDENTS. ON DOWNWARD GRADIENTS ACCIDENT RATE DECREASES WITH INCREASING LENGTH. IN ALL IT WAS DEMONSTRATED THAT THE LENGTH OF GRADIENTS HAS VERY LITTLE EFFECT ON ACCIDENT RATES. |
